Defiance is based on actual events during World War II, where Polish Jews under the leadership of the Bielski brothers, survived and prospered in a forest. Hollywood has departed from the truth in certain areas, but it remains a modern day twist on the ancient Robin Hood tale. This congregation rescued Jews and never turned anyone away, taking from the rich to feed the poor. Somehow they managed to sustain huge numbers, whilst surviving under constant threat of attack. The main attraction is the story, which shows Jews in a new light, taking up arms and being more aggressive than we’ve seen before. The main actors put in good shifts, but the script quite often falls into bad habits, becoming confused and predictable. At times this is a war film, other moments a tale of family or newfound love. The end result is a film that is unjustifiably too long and required more focus from Edward Zwick. Those expecting plenty of action or Schindlers List will be disappointed.
What shocked me the most about this film, was the fact that the so called victims, were just as bloody and vengeful as the alleged abusers! Just goes to show that no-one's innocent! I didn't enjoy this film at all, as I thought it hi-lighted an uncomfortable truth about human behaviour during tines of severe stress, such as war time. In essence these brothers and their encampment are preying upon the Germans and inflicting the same horrors against them , which makes them hypocrites in a fashion! there is one thing fighting in a resistance and another enacting pure vengeance and hate crimes against soldiers doing their job!
Daniel Craig was never better! This great war film was overlooked for awards, but made up for it in box office returns. Made between Craig's Bond debut 'Casino Royale' and it's sequel, this film is their equal in action packed entertainment and betters them in drama and gravity of (true) storyline. Jamie Bell and Liev Schreiber are equally memorable, and the large cast is faultless. A bit of WW2 history I didn't know, the years long battle of Jewish refugees to fight the Nazis from the great East European forest, you cannot fail to be entertained!
Rent it!!
