Fabulous story, beautifully filmed and acted. Emotionally moving script that felt authentic. The move of refugees from the frying pan into the fire. Brilliant.
We have enjoyed films directed by Jacques Audiard before and this lived up to the reviews and his reputation. The story of a Tamil Tiger, Dheepan, washing up in a lawless estate in France with a ready made family was beautifully realised. The acting was superb and had a naturalistic feel.
This was a gripping account of the realities (or what I take to be the realities) of the refugee experience. The violence of the banlieues was more than matched by the violence that the hero had already experienced in Sri Lanka. The contrast between refugee life in France and life in England could not be more marked; no wonder the boats keep on coming. Perhaps this was exaggerated, but a remarkable and illuminating film.
