Synopsis:
Acclaim for the star-studded Scala 'Don Giovanni': Netrebko's Donna Anna was thrilling in her nobility and ease of execution. She is on grand form. Donna Elvira... played with vivid neurosis by Frittoli... a compelling performance. Terfel found humour and despair, frustration and embarrassment, tenderness and blind fury in his convincing 'outsider' Leporello. In the title role Mattei has the looks and the voice. Barenboim chose steady, almost old-fashioned tempi and a majestic sound. The orchestra glowed in response. With the "exciting young Anna Prohaska" as a "seductive Zerlina".

A disappointing production - Don Giovanni: Teatro Alla Scala (Daniel Barenboim) review by VM

Spoiler Alert
03/02/2017

The opera is, of course, superb but this was a disappointing production - barely more than a concert performance, + part of the idea of an opera is the visuals, surely? As for Barenboim's pace - well, you either love it or hate it; his slow tempos took the sparkle out of the music, his fast tempos lost the sparkle in the rush - well, I thought! The voices were wonderful but the talent was wasted.
