2007 BAFTA Best Supporting Actress
This is a fairly watchable musical drama. Its is fairly entertaining but being fairly light and fun it doesnt really stand out. However if you like Hudson and Beyonce you will like this film as theres a lot of signing.
A bit of fun, but no real story. The singing was good but the songs were rather average. I’m not going to watch it again.
Can I rate this film with minus stars? If only...
If you like musicals or you like motown/disco music this film is not for you. If you thought you were seeing an approximate tribute to the Supremes or Diana Ross, this film is not for you.
Songs are long, screechy, repetitive and instantly forgettable. Emotions are only expressed with volume (more volume = more pain - for everyone!). No performance shines, no characters are truly developed, no one has our sympathy.
As the film progresses, the frequency of ear-splitting and tooth-grindingly awful songs increases. Every twist and turn is punctuated with a burst of song, like some grim spoof of a musical. Because of this, the plot and characterisation stutters along, not really going anyway and failing to entertain.
Dreamgirls is a poor imitation of both the biopic and musical genre. It doesn't know which it wants to be and consequently fails to be either.
Truly truly awful.
