Synopsis:
Starring luminous stars of the future Julia Garner and Rory Culkin, the film follows young Mormon virgin Rachel (Garner) who awakens one day to find herself inexplicably pregnant after secretly listening to a forbidden tape of The Nerves classic hit Hanging on the Telephone. Facing shame in her community and a forced marriage set up by her father (Billy Zane), Rachel flees the strict compound where she lives and hits the road in search of the singer on the tape - the man she is convinced has made her pregnant through music.
Lost in Las Vegas, oddball Rachel falls in with a bunch of slacker skater punk-rockers led by dreamy lost boy Clyde (Culkin) and together are thrown into a very different new world full of music, romance and possibility.

Funny and interesting - Electrick Children review by AER

Spoiler Alert
31/01/2022

This light 'fish out of water' comedy with an indie twist ends up being slight and a touch convoluted. It's still enjoyable, and it was good to see Billy Zane in a rewarding (and ambiguous) role for once in his life. Skateboarders, neo-punk groups, Las Vegas lights, pickup trucks; all modern Americana tropes are present and set the scene well for this story of a weird immaculate conception and a peculiar pair of runaways from a religious commune. It's ultimately very light and early hints at darkness never (thankfully) materialise. Much of the plot leans heavily into serendipity and quirks but I'm not mad at it, I'll struggle to remember it though.

6 out of 10 - Cool and breezy
