Flawless comes as a pleasant surprise although to be fair I wasn’t expecting too much initially. 60’s London has been splendidly recreated, without the cut and thrust of pop art. This is a heist with a difference, one without brutality. Demi Moore plays a faithful manager, slowly aging and realising that despite her efforts the male hierarchy will never recognise her abilities. It’s a very strong performance from her, one I wasn’t expecting, although making her an American in London is a concession, but in hindsight avoids a distracting accent.
There were only 2 things about this film I would change. Demi Moore's make up to age her to her 70s was disastrous, I suspect a pot of wallpaper paste was involved. The other was the suggestion that sticking diamonds to the underside of long finger nails is a good way of smuggling. Otherwise it is brilliant (the adjectives are a bit too easy for a diamond film review) Demi Moore puts in an unusually good performance Michael Caine is multifaceted and captivating. The period is very well portrayed. The sexism possibly underplayed to appeal to a modern audience. The plot a real twister I won't spoil it except to say well worth watching.
Not entirely credible but beautifully-acted -written & -shot diamond-heist caper.
The movie is filled with anti-mercantilist political points about greed as a substitute for genuine trade and the fact that capitalism in the West is little more than a facade for a rigged system designed to benefit only a few Caucasian males. This all made me root for the lower-class central character as he attempts a convoluted revenge against the world of global corporate exploitation-for-profit.
The clever twist in the middle of the film is quite surprising and forces you to reassess what is really going on here in thematic terms. All of which helps enforce the point that there is more to life than an all-too-necessary materialism.
