Synopsis:
Mel Gibson leads an all star cast in Franco Zeffirelli's version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Upon returning to Denmark Hamlet learns that his father has passed away and that his mother has already married Hamlets Uncle, Claudius (Alan Bates). Hamlet is urged to marry his beloved sweetheart Ophelia (Helena Bonham-Carter) but soon the ghost of his father returns to visit him, revealing that he was in fact murdered by his uncle Claudius and mother Gertrude (Glenn Close). Hamlet must choose between passive acquiescence and the need for a vengeance which may ultimately lead to tragedy.

I AM RELATIVELY NEW TO STUDYING SHAKESPEARE, AND THIS FILM IS AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION. AFTER READING THE TEXT IT MAKES MANY ASPECTS CLEAR, AND THE CHARACTERS ARE CONVINCING.

Am I really the first - Hamlet review by JD

This is such an immense classic I thought I was the last person to see it, and didn't check the reviews because it was such a certain rental. I have seen a few Shakespearian films which have been pretty dull (sorry Derek), but this is brilliant, passionate and easy enough to follow (I am not a Shakespearian aficionado). Shakespeare can be gripping on film, this is the best I have seen.
