Very superficial and light. Did not retain children's attention for long (ages 8 and 10). Obvious plot with deliberately fluffy hero and pals. Seen it all before. A poor relation to Madagascar. Probably best for younger children.
This is an animated film, based on teh day to day life of the penguin, focusing for much for the film on 'finding your song', as the song that expresses their soul. The main character can't sing but boy can he dance.
Main themes are falling in love and being true to yourself, with the back story of mankind's effect on the environment from over fishing.
The music is great - with vast montages / medlies / counterpoints and interplay of well known songs from all eras - which are truly a delight. The animation is amazing and there are also genuinely touching moments.
This may be more involved tahn some animated films and aimed as much at adults as to children - in fact adults will probably get more out of it than kids.
I do not often write reviews because I'm not a professional critic and I figure 'who cares what I think?' But I must seriously warn you not to waste 104 minutes of your life on this terrible tosh. The visuals are ugly - none of the characters are endearing; the singing is tuneless wailing and shrieking; the dancing is not particularly clever or entertaining; and it's silly, boring, and 100 minutes too long.
I was forced to watch it with grandchildren of 5, 11 and 14, and when it was over it turned out every one of us felt the same but was too polite to say so in case the others were enjoying it.
And they made a sequel? Good grief!
