This collection demonstrates the star quality and versatility that Helen Mirren has shown throughout her career. Here we find eye-catching 'theatrical' performances in restoration classics such as 'The Changeling' and 'The Country Wife'; a starring appearance alongside the cream of British actors in George Bernard Shaw's 'The Apple Cart' and a bewitching performance as Babbie, a beautiful and mysterious gypsy in J. M. Barrie's melodrama 'The Little Minister'. Dame Helen was also gathering attention as an actress in modern dramas. She took a prominent role in 'Caesar and Claretta' and joined the biting 'bourgeois' comedy 'The Philanthropist'. In the late 70's and early 80's she starred in some major BBC plays, including 'Mrs. Reinhardt' and Dennis Potter's dark fable of childhood, 'Blue Remembered Hills'. In this period she also took part in the epic BBC Shakespeare project, returning to her roots as a classic actress with acclaimed performances in 'Cymbeline' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The summary does not mention that she appears in the title rôle of The Country Wife, her husband none other than Bernard Cribbens. After a slow start this becomes a bawdy farce. We need more Restoration comedy on disc.
