Synopsis:
Alain Delon in his star-making role, plays Tom Ripley, an American who travels to Europe on an all-expenses-paid mission to convince his friend, the charismatic playboy Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet), to travel to San Francisco at the request of the wealthy Greenleaf family. Initially, the pair enjoy the good life in Italy, often to the anger and dismay of Philippe's much put-upon fiancee Marge (Marie Laforet). However, as Tom's funds begin to run dry, it becomes more and more apparent that Philippe has no intention of returning to the U.S., forcing Tom to consider more calculated means of maintaining his extravagant lifestyle.

Sunny Thriller. - Purple Noon review by Steve

Spoiler Alert
28/06/2012

Gorgeous and ultra-stylish version of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley set on the touristic Amalfi Coast, Italy, which deservedly made a star of moody Alain Delon in the title role. Its serene pacing allows for atmosphere without compromising on the suspense.

The sunny locations are so lovely that although this is about a schizophrenic who kills a couple of filthy rich expats, the tourist board of Naples must surely have approved. And with the shabby-chic clothes, beautiful stars and elegant interiors this is one of the most fashionable films ever made.

That aspirational quality is ideal for story about an insolvent, sociopathic American (Delon) who wants some of what the rich have and will do anything to get it. And given how cooly he goes about it, may have done it before. Which means danger for the affluent dilettante (Maurice Ronet) he was hired to bring home.

Delon is a sensation. At first, as the poor nobody, he is sympathetic. Until we see just how crazy he is. The whole photogenic cast is excellent. And it is superbly edited and photographed. There is nothing else like this. The remakes don’t come close; this is one of the great thrillers.

Fantastico - Purple Noon review by dl

The first movie outing for the talented Mr.Ripley and also the first full feature for one Alain Delon which catapulted him onto international stardom, I can totally see why he totally nails this performance with such onscreen coolness charm and believability and fully succeeds in maintaining this creepy elegance for the films entire duration. The whole film really was just a total joy to watch from begining to end from its psychological intrigue too its moments of passion envy and murder. And along with Delon’s remarkable performance we also get and are treated to some stunning jaw dropping cinematography thats set adrift and onshore fully capturing the feel and look of its beautiful sun drenched Italian settings, it’s a real thing of beauty and fully brought to justice with a spot on restoration the colours, place and sounds just scream take me there.Really not sure why it took me so long to view this very classy and Classic piece of filmmaking from Clément 8+/10

The eyes have it. - Purple Noon review by RhysH

Spoiler Alert

How did Plein Soleil become Purple Noon? I like the Minghella film of the Highsmith's 1955 novel and this one directed by René Clément is also pretty true to the mood of the story just coming at it from a slightly different angle.

Alain Delon plays Tom Ripley with just the right amount of restrained menace, he looks great.

Lots of close-ups of eyes, everybody watching everybody else, in particular the lovely green eyes of Marie Laforêt.
