- Director Gabe Polsky and Executive Producer Warner Herzog present the untold story of how ice hockey became a fundamental player in the Cold War's battle of wits, betrayal and double-crossing between North America and the former Soviet Union in this exhilarating and highly acclaimed documentary. Using archival footage and interviews from team members on both sides of the Iron Curtain, 'Red Army' reveals how closely the worlds of international sport and international politics are linked. Interesting - Red Army review by DB
We don't like Ice Hockey, let's get that out of the way first. It is not a sport I enjoy watching and never will. However this film is an interesting insight into how sport was used to prop up a political ideal. It offers an insight behind the iron curtain and the very strict regime that the players had to go through to achieve the countries goals. And when you then see footage of the USSR team playing, wow! It cannot be doubted that the way they played the sport is mesmorising. Even for someone who doesn't like the sport, you can fully appreciate just how good they were, like watching Matthew Le Tissier in the Premier League. Overall, a very interesting film that can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in ice hockey or the old USSR and the cold war. Well worth the 80 minutes running time.
