John River (Stellan Skarsgärd) is a gifted police officer with a secret. As a man haunted by manifestations of the dead, including a tormenting killer, Thomas Cream (Eddie Marsan) and the murder victims whose secrets he must unlock, he walks a tightrope between maintaining respectability at work and managing his own fragile state of mind. His colleague and confidant, Detective Sergeant Jackie Stevie Stevenson (Nicola Walker) lends River the emotional support he so badly needs, whilst his boss, Chief Inspector Chrissie Reid (Lesley Manville) is conflicted between River s obvious talents and his evident problems. Adrift in a London full of other exiled souls, River's own isolation helps him connect with the troubled victims who crash into his world, and to see the truth in ways his colleagues are drawn to admire and question, in equal measure. But as his long-held defences are eroded by love and loss, River is torn between the living and the dead; will he have to choose once and for all? - Actors:

Missed this when it was on TV and someone told me it was good. It actually was a brilliant, totally unmissable and different detective/drama story. I loved every minute of it. If you missed this on TV don't miss it now

Rather rubbish - River: The Complete Series review by RC
Would not reccommend. A departure from Nicola Walkers usual captivating roles. Hard to get into and confusing plot. Hard to know if people are “real” or just seen by him. Very slow. A lot of the scenes are slowed down to a frustratingly low pace. The music is too loud and misplaced.
A frustrating watch which doesn’t really flow or go together. I watched first episode and knew it wasn’t for me. Very hard to care about any of the characters. And difficult to Belive anybody does not own a telly. Would predict a few further frustrating plot holes ahead and sent it back without completing.
