Synopsis:
The year is 52 B.C. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people, epicentre of a sprawling empire. The Republic was founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome.
A serialized drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, Rome chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of a republic and the birth of an empire.

great series - Rome: Series 1 review by CP Customer

This is a fantastic new series; we thoroughly enjoyed the adaptation of Roman history into a reasonably accurate TV drama. Unfortunately the accents of some of the actors take away from the authenticity of the production.

History to life - Rome: Series 1 review by JD

Spoiler Alert

I trust that this is a reasonably accurate historical account because it makes roman history seem very real. Some of the characters are totally mercenary / mercilessly objective but somehow it seems very plausible. There are some interesting angles to the roman expansion, like did the legionnaires have totally messed up family lives? The sex lives of the soldiers and some of the politicians and their wives is pretty crude and unemotional. The 18 certificate is based on this, though the knife fights are quite impressive. Some of the acting is a little sketchy and it is difficult to get very involved with most of the main characters. As a historical drama though it is very interesting.
