Don't believe the hype - Seven Pounds review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
12/04/2009

Will Smith teams up with the director of In The Pursuit of Happiness for another sentimental tale. The studio hyped Will’s performance in Seven Pounds, and while it is certainly a meatier role compared to previous outings, it’s not expansive or demanding by most standards. Smith should stop playing safe and really throw himself into a part that requires research, dedication and a total transformation. Instead we have another clean cut corporate type, who has everything life can provide. He plays, well; it would be spoiling the predictable twist to really delve into the plot. Seven Pounds is a story about redemption, good deeds and helping strangers. We can certainly all take something from this in today’s society, when others may not be as fortunate as ourselves. As a drama it lacks weight, depth and development, when the premise warranted much more.

Wow what a great film. Did not know what to expect and the story is not obvious until very near the end. Get the tissues - a great watch!

Lasting impression - Seven Pounds review by JD

When you see a film that sneaks into your thoughts all the following day; is that a good film? I think so. It is emotional which will appeal to many but also very thought provoking. Without giving too much away the central character is driving and is distracted when his car collides. 7 are killed including his wife. His guilt and sense of loss become intensely motivating. Is this possible, to become so focussed and determined, driven by such a force? Extreme altruism is difficult to believe, and this is what the film leaves you with. Is it believable? It is a bit overly sentimental at times in an attempt to stay mainstream, but I didn't find it too contrived.
