Everybody knows the story so I'm not going to bore you all to death with, once upon a time ....
Certain films just look stunning in black and white, this being one. The cinematography really catches the France imagined in the story.
Maureen O'Hara was born for this part, she is stupendous, a superstar of the old school of film stars. Laughton is also great as Quasimodo, the social outcast who falls in love with the kindly enchantress. That makes two of us Quasi.
I first seen this film when I was very young, and the images stayed with me, until I seen it several more times as an adult. Totally enchanting.
Quite literally one of the greatest films in terms of the people in it, there must have been up to a thousand on the cast list. But the main character is so brilliantly acted by Laughton, it's hard to think that anyone could ever do it better, or indeed want to. And Maureen O'Hara is wonderful as Esmeralda, in this her first film, at the age of 19. The supporting cast are all the best that could have acted in such a truly fantastic film. One of the Greatest.
The pace of this film never falters, it has you riveted from the start and never lets up.
The black and white production adds to the film, as it does with the Third Man or Casablanca. The filming is done by master craftsmen and the acting is well up to it.
Do not miss seeing this film, I wish I'd seen it a long time before I did.
