Superb performance from Helen Mirren
- The Queen review by CP Customer
I didn't really want to watch this as I thought it would be like one of those awful made for TV movies. How wrong was I?! It is a really well made film with excellent performances from so many of the cast. The story revolves around the death of Princess Diana and how different members of the Royal Family react. The Queen and Tony Blair have an interesting relationship as he tries to help her out of her sudden slump into unpopularity. Both characters are portrayed sympathetically and come out of the film quite well. Cherie Blair is played as a nasty, ungainly character and Phillip and the Queen mum come across as selfish and unpleasant. Probably not one to watch if you are a staunch royalist! Helen Mirren is outstanding as The Queen and manages to portray her grace and 'breeding' whilst also showing her love and concern for her grandchildren.

Better than you might think
- The Queen review by Pete W
Definately not one of those dreadful films about the life and loves of the Windsors but a worthwhile attempt to portray the reaction within the royal household to the death of Princess Diana. At the time, the Royal Family seemed callous and uncaring. In the film some of them still are (particularly Philip) but the Queen herself (wonderful performance by Helen Mirren)is obviously in shock and needs rescuing (much to her chagrin) by young Mr Blair. Michael Sheen has deservedly got a monopoly on portrayals of our former Prime Minister - the voice and mannerisms are perfect. A scene stealing turn as the Queen Mum with an unexpected hard edge by Sylvia Syms. But worth watching for Helen Mirren's performance alone.

Fantastic portrayal, superbly told story
- The Queen review by CP Customer
I have wanted to see this film for a while now & finally hired ot out a week or so ago.
The Queen definitely lived up to the hype, it was a great insight to the inner circle of the monarchy while telling the story surrounding Princess Diana's death & problems ensuing from the Royal's decisions in a very dignified way.
All actors, specially Helen Mirren, have done a fantastic job in portraying their characters & the scenery is beautiful.
I would definitely recommend this film if you are looking for a good film to sink your teeth into.

Great performance - good film
- The Queen review by Tim from London
A barnstorming performance from Helen Mirren. She manages to capture the Queen's aloofness - while also injecting warmth and tenderness. Most of all she portrays a real person who is out of touch with modern values and struggling to maintain her sense of duty. This could quite easily have been over/under acted and the results would have been disasterous. Having said all that I felt the film was good but was lacking in any narrative tension - given that we know what is going to happen - and at times the other actors played their characters as if they were the Spitting Image puppets (eg Phillip - in a couple of scenes). But worth watching for Helen Mirren alone.

Impressive performance

This film gives you an insight into the life of the Royal family from a never seen perspective. It shows the monarch as a real person. The blending of real footage from the events surrounding Princess Diana's death and acted scenes worked really well. I loved the scene where the Queen admired the beautiful stag as she suddenly became more human.

The Queen
- The Queen review by DC
Very good performances all round. An interesting show from Helen Mirren on interpreting the person and the role of the monarch. How do you live out a position of state? You cannot really separate the person and the crown. To me it clearly demonstrates the conflict of interest between the private person and the public persona. The clear clash of personalities of Elizabeth the Queen and Diana the Princess of Wales. Two very different images of the royal institution. The desire for privacy and dignity and the compulsion and need to let the public in as head of state. If you want to be the monarch it has a price. The screen play draws attention to this conflict. The messages on the cards clearly have an impact on the character. Again what we see is very different from what the royals see in private. So an excellent story telling on this. The creepiness of the political play is worth watching closely. You are popular for now! But also the sombre monarchy of desperately wanting privacy but being forced into public demonstrations of grief. Just watch the twists and turns.
