- Theatricality and all-too-real human frailties combine in Bergman's critique of both censorial hypocrisy and the pretensions of creative artists. A touring experimental theatre troupe provides the latter, while an austere judge (Erik Hell) investigating its supposedly obscene production reflects the director's own frustrations with authority figures during his career. The sanctity of art, and its curse, are to the fore in a revealing, polemical study of the nature of performance and its relationship to its audience, willing or not.

Jewelled violence - The Rite review by NW
One crazed, internally conflicted judge; three batty and intermittently violent actors accused of obscene performances: a cast of four. That makes an extravaganza for Bergman as author and director and gives a spectrum of opportunities for the distinguished cast in wild but perfectly controlled performances. And then – it is a real pleasure to have a carefully and exactly controlled film that is only 74 minutes long. I ask for no more. We get masterly construction, excellent camera work and acting, leading to speculative outcomes from an ambiguous ending.
