Synopsis:
Deceived into investing all of her savings in worthless, regularly flooded farmland, incapable of supporting crops and perilously close to the ocean, The Sea Wall tells the compelling story of one mother's fight to protect her family - Joseph (Gaspard Ulliel) and Suzanne (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) - from destitution at the hands of a corrupt administration. Battling both the colonial bureaucrats and nature itself, she enlists the help of the local villagers, putting into place an elaborate scheme: building a dam against the sea to secure the future of both her family and the local community.

Indochine - The Sea Wall review by CH

Spoiler Alert
02/10/2023

France (much like the British and Dutch) colonised parts of Asia in the name of a crusade to bring European civilisation to the indigenous populations. The rewards were allegedly bountifully cheap land grabs, control of cheap labour, trade and new land owner prosperity. Seawall shows the follies of these Western incursions into unknown foreign territories, where farming and agriculture on this newly acquired land can be like gambling, a fools game with more losses than gains in the battle with nature. Isabelle Hupert stars as a careworn debt ridden incomer.
