Synopsis:
Stephen Graham stars as Joseph, a moral yet troubled man who's lost everything he ever held dear. Joseph finds himself compelled to travel to Ireland to confront the demons that continue to haunt him from a childhood spent in the care system, a journey that will have savage and brutal consequences. His path soon crosses with that of Dinah, played by Niamh Algar. She's fiery and more than able to stand up for herself, but like Joseph she's also deeply guarded, holding close a secret she's hiding from all those around her.
Joseph and Dinah's lives spiral intensely in and out of control as they both try to ground themselves, torn between morality and self-indulgence, defined by drug-induced self destruction, traumatised by their own harrowing histories, and yet enlightened by their dual faith in companionship. Survival instincts kick in as they pave their way to an unnerving and tormented future. Neither of them thought their lives would ever tangle into a delicate love story.

Best mini-series ever? - The Virtues review by TE

Spoiler Alert
24/09/2019

Shane Meadows is at the very top of his game in this extremely powerful mini-series.

The tension builds relentlessly towards a magnificently handled conclusion. But, do watch the Extras at the end of the second disc for equally credible and brilliant alternative endings.

Stephen Graham has become one of the finest actors around, and his performance here is magnetically good.

As ever with Meadows, the domestic and community settings are perfectly captured.

It's hard to say more without giving the core of the story away, suffice to say this is absolutely top drawer film making.

Dark subject matter - The Virtues review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert

The subject matter is very dark and sad. Steven Graham as usual is inspirational and so convincing. Brilliant.

His supporting actors were so touching.A magnificent tale.

Not what I expected - The Virtues review by Dap

Spoiler Alert
23/06/2020

The opening scenes were not convincing, I felt that the actors were add libbing and that there was no script with directed dialogue.

My appetite for watching further scenes was gone and I cannot make a valid judgement of the drama as a whole.

I have a great deal of respect for the actors and enjoyed their performances on many previous occasions.

I regret any negative impressions my limited judgement might generate that might have been better had I persevered to watch the whole drama.
