Synopsis:
Love, laughs and outstanding stars add a warm glow to this heartfelt hit comedy. For a sensitive young boy, some distressing news about his mother (Andie MacDowell) and neglect from his crackpot inventor father (John Turturro) force him into the refuge of his wildly eccentric uncles. Their wacky lifestyle and his impressionable mind lead to one zany situation after another. It's an unlikely trio for sure, but together they'll learn some valuable lessons about love, life and family pride.

Interesting but not entirely successful drama - Unstrung Heroes review by Mr Aquarium

Spoiler Alert
03/09/2018

A young boy in the USA of the late 1950s or early 1960s has an oddball, sometimes insensitive father, a loving but progressively unwell mother, and two very eccentric uncles. This has engaging characters, some effective acting, and one or two powerful scenes, but there's a sense that the screenplay is uneven. The film begins as driven by the eccentricities and their effect on the boy, but then the film is increasingly shaped by the mother's illness. It's not quite in balance; you sense that with more work on the screenplay, a better film would've emerged.
