Synopsis:
Walerian Borowczyk has worked relentlessly to bring to perfection a special kind of art, an enclave in the world of cinema, a mirror of his challenging mind and lightning inspiration. Long before 'Immoral Tales' (1973) and 'The Beast' (1975), fine artist turned animator Walerian Borowczyk initially made his name with dazzlingly original short films. This edition includes 'Astronauts' (1959), 'The Concert' (1964), 'Grandma's Encyclopaedia' (1963), 'Renaissance' (1963), 'Angels' Games' (1964), 'Joachim's Dictionary' (1966), 'Rosalie' (1966), 'Gavotte' (1968), 'Diptych' (1967), 'The Phonograph' (1969), 'The Greatest Love of All Time' (1977) and 'Scherzo Infernal' (1984).
In 1967, Borowczyk unveiled "a feature-length animated film for mature adults", 'Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal' (1967), about a grotesquely mismatched but strangely loving couple who inhabit a desert full of strange flora and fauna.

The mechanics of animation - Walerian Borowczyk: Short Films and Animation review by Johannes

Spoiler Alert
04/09/2021

Walerian Borowczyk's animations are unmistakable, teeming with innuendo, danger, wit and lined with absurdist comedy. His animations are fascinated with the mechanics of animation, of life — similar to the Brothers Quay and Jan Švankmajer — with things made and unmade, sculpted or taken apart, within their small narratives. There is something Frankenstein about this animation, something crude and raw. Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal does all of this within its vaudeville skits: here, the eponymous married couple quarrel and make up, fight and love, whilst shrinking and growing to incredible sizes. It's immensely playful and imaginative.
