- A wry and comic look at the shifting of power in sexual relationships, Francois Ozon's film is adapted from a play written but never staged by the celebrated German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. When the smooth-talking Leopold (Bernard Giraudeau), a successful businessman of 50, seduces 20-year-old Franz, the youngster falls under his spell and moves in with him. But Leopold soon reveals his true colours and Franz contemplates returning to her girlfriend (Ludivine Sagnier) - until Leopold seduces her too. The arrival of Leopold's former lover Vera, a male to female transsexual, only complicates matters further.

Hilarious, wacky and sad - Water Drops on Burning Rocks review by CP Customer
..in other words a real Fassbinder story with French actors playing German characters, so it's helpful to understand German as the director has kept the poems and lyrics in German and they are relevant and poignant. Obviously not family weekend entertainment, but for the mature viewer.

It's art - Water Drops on Burning Rocks review by RD
A proper play, cleverly written and it's art so don't expect it to be fun!
I expect the whole class to write an essay after watching the play, and it should be entitled "Sexual power and attraction between the four characters" and no sniggering at the back.
