Schoolteacher Brian (Alan Bates) and his wife Sheila (Janet Suzman) are the parents of young Jo (Elizabeth Robillard), a child afflicted with cerebral palsy. Caring for Jo threatens to overwhelm their lives, and to stay sane they rely on dark humour. But while Sheila tries to ensure that her daughter has some quality of life, Brian is increasingly obsessed with the idea that she might be better off dead...
