Schoolteacher Brian (Alan Bates) and his wife Sheila (Janet Suzman) are the parents of young Jo (Elizabeth Robillard), a child afflicted with cerebral palsy. Caring for Jo threatens to overwhelm their lives, and to stay sane they rely on dark humour.
