- It is 1943 and the Ashton family, at home or abroad, are all suffering the horrors of war. David and Sheila Ashton are contemplating divorce, John Porter stars work at the Town Hall after his return from the dead, while Margaret tries to find the moment to confess her affair. Edwin gets unexpected news of Phillip in Germany and goes to uncover the truth. There is family happiness when Freda marries Doctor Ian Mackenzie. Christmas 1945 is a time for the family to reflect and remember the sadness of losing loved ones as well as the moments of joy that war has brought.
