Eric (Jason Sudeikis) is a thirty-something yuppie in Manhattan who is so decided he doesn’t want to grow up, he throws themed house parties in their old home in the Hamptons that would rival a college fraternity’s! His life as a single douchebag man is heaven, but when his father (Don Johnson) tells him the Hamptons party place is on sale, he is devastated. Before Eric loses his right (and venue) to party, he schemes and charms the realtor’s cute assistant (Leslie Bibb) and comes up with the party to end all parties with his best friend (Tyler Labine) – ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’!
Written and directed by Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’ is an comedy that could be the adult version of ‘American Pie’. Yes, the characters all want to get laid but in ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’, they want to get laid TOGETHER. The ‘orgy’ in the title is not a come-on, that’s exactly the sort of party Jason Sudeikis’ character is after. But there’s a catch: he wants to have an orgy – with his friends. How awkward is that? How foul could ‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’ be? Is nothing sacred anymore?
Jason Sudeikis and *gulp* Don Johnson are the only ‘real’ stars in the cast, and they couldn’t carry this romp of a movie even if they tried. As breakout stars go, Sudeikis is good on two things: impersonation (thanks ‘SNL’) and the adorable douchebag. This isn’t his shining moment. He does great as sidekicks (‘Going the Distance’, ‘Hall Pass’) but as a leading man? Too soon. Best of all, you know Sudeikis’ character is sleazeballs and mentally- and emotionally-stunted of a man, and yet we are made to believe he’s adorable and worth giving a shot, that he could change for the better. One could dream.
‘A Good Old Fashioned Orgy’ may seem like a Judd Apatow production at first glance but Apatow has nothing to do with this. It does want to be.
