Mr. Upendranath (Gajanan Jagirdar), a retired cornmissioner, is a noble person who lives in 'Prem Bhavan' a temple of love, affection, peace and serenity. Chander (Vikram Makandar), the youngest son is a coolege student and is in love with Vandana (Zaheera), his class mate and the only daughter of Mr. Tandon (Pinchoo Kapoor), an industrialist with modern outlook. Mr. Upendranath who has a great affection for every one in his family has also a liking for Abdul (Shatrughan Sinha), a pedlar who occasionally visits ' Prem Bhavan' to supply articles ordered by various members of the house. Though Abdul is a poor man. He enjoys the friendship of Chander. Both are sincereto each other. Abdul believes in hard work as well as in the dignity of labour. Love that has deveioped between Chander and Vandana reaches the stage of marriage proposal. But as the saying goes 'Man Proposes. God Disposes' the marriage does not take place as Mr. Upendranath dies just at the marriage time due to hert failure. The life in 'Prem Bhavan' now takes a new turn. When Madan (Sujit Kumar) and Surendra (Deven Verma) come to know that their deceased father has left nothing but a long list of his creditors and a will not much in their favour they approach Mr. Tandon for Vandana's marriage with Chander. But Mr. Tandon flatly refuses to go ahead with the proposel and breaks the 'Mangni' as he is quite aware of the fact that Mr. Upendranath was almost a broke during the last days of his life. After this incident a great tension arises in 'Prem Bhavan' Chander who was once the darling of every one in the family is now considered a liability only. And atlast a day comes when he is ruthlessly thrown out of the house. See the rest on the screen.
