Cilea's intoxicating opera is brought to new life on the Royal Opera House stage after a century's absence. Director David McVicar's interpretation for The Royal Opera of this neglected masterpiece recreates the Comedie-Francaise in its heyday, the early-eighteenth century. As the drama heightens, the lovers - sung by Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann - are irreversibly bound into a melee of passion. The jealousy and revenge that surround them can only lead to heartbreak and tragedy.
