Synopsis:
Agustin's Newspaper is a Chilean documentary directed by Ignacio Agüero and Fernando Villagrán. The documentary is about how a group of journalism students start and realize an investigation about the editorial line of El Mercurio S.A.P. El Mercurio is one of the leading and most conservative Chilean newspapers and is part of the media duopoly that exists in our country with COPESA. On the other hand. El Mercurio is a part of a media conglomerate that includes other national and regional newspapers as: Las últimas noticias, La segunda, Hoy x hoy, El Mercurio de Valparaíso, Austral de Temuco, inter alia.
All this media conglomerate is owned of Agustín Edwards Eastman,Chilean businessman and journalist. Edwards is member of an information dynasty that has directed the paper for over 150 years. The documentary presents the process of the investigation realizes by Universidad de Chile´s students, specifically by journalism students of ICEI. I think that is a interesting and illuminating documentary, because the film questions the impunity of dominant media and influence on national life. The documentary show the powerful of the media. Also Agustin's Newspaper is a documentary that reveals El Mercurio´s ruses for mask the violations of human rights during Pinochet´s dictatorship, also the documentary reviews forty years of El Mercurio’s history unveiling its alliances with US and Chilean representatives or power during the Pinochet years.
