The rapid development of efficient monoplane aircraft in the 1930s paved the way for the savage air warfare of World War Two. This programme tells the story of the battles fought over the Blitzkrieg battlefields of Poland and western Europe, followed by the German air front over England during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. In 1941 a new air front was opened over southern Europe including Albania, Greece and Crete. This was followed by the German invasion of Russia during Operation Barbarossa and the air campaign over the Mediterranean.
