Synopsis:
Oscar-winning stage and screen veteran Wendy Hiller brings characteristic subtlety, grace and quiet determination to the role of a recently widowed woman who intends to relish her newfound freedom in this acclaimed three-part drama. Lady Slane (Wendy Hiller) sits beside the body of her husband in a bedroom of their elegant home. The handsome, distinguished Henry Holland, Prime Minister, Viceroy of India and Earl of Slane (John Bott), has died at the age of 94. As her children ponder what is to be done with mother, 85-year-old Lady Slane realises that for the first time in her life, she is free to live where, and how, she chooses.
And after more than half a century as a dutiful and loving wife, she revels in her new-found independence and the company of new friends...despite the wishes of her family.

A quiet gem - All Passion Spent review by ef

Although the gentle pace and old fashioned social attitudes may put off some, this is a well observed and masterfully acted drama. Wendy Hiller is outstanding in the lead role, playing with skilful understatement, and proving that beauty can be as real in an eighty year old face as in a young person. Harry Andrews is bluff and convincing as her friend from the past, and Maurice Denham plays with relish and humour as her quixotic landlord. The minor characters might be stereotypical figures but are all acted with polish by a distinguished cast.

A delight - All Passion Spent review by JB

We had no idea what to expect. This 3-episode series proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable night's viewing. Excellent performances by a cast of established actors. Obviously not for those who want a lot of action and histrionics, but a calm and considered piece that encourages the viewer to listen and to think. Wish there were more in this mould.
