Allen Ginsberg was the father of 'flower-power' and an icon of American counter-culture. a bohemian poet who gave the bohemian beat generation it’s best known and most powerful voice. He studied law at Columbia University, then decided to become a poet. He became famous after publishing his poem ‘Howl’ in 1956 in San Francisco. It was banned and the trial of it’s publisher gave the poem news exposure across America. He was a model non-conformist, archetypal gay rights activist, the classic campaigner against censorship, virtually invented ‘flower-power’ and was an adroit survivor. He was a presence at ‘be-ins’ and anti-war protest. He gave poetry reading across America and in later years practiced Buddhism, took up photography and taught. He published 40 books in his life which sell more copies now than they even did in the 1960’s. He died aged 70 in New York on 5 April 1997. On October 19th 1995 Allen Ginsberg was invited to an underground nightclub in Charing Cross central London. He read poetry, changed and sang. This film, shot on a single Hi-8 camera, captures that reading. It was Allen Ginsberg’s last UK public poetry reading. - Actors:
