Amalia Rodrigues, the great singer and major exponent of Portuguese fado, gives a powerful live concert recorded in Japan in 1986.
Amalia, who first became a star in the 1930's, had if anything only gained in power and expressiveness by the 80's. Wearing her characteristic black, deftly backed by three superb guitarists, she brings her charisma, intensity, and trademark earthliness to an amazing 25 numbers - folk songs, classic fado compositions, and her own originals.
From the opening classic "Naufragio," written by her frequent composer and producer, Alan Oulman through originals like "Grito" and "Lavava No Rio Lavava," to the rousing, lilting folk of the closing "Malhao," Amalia gives an adoring Japanese audience on overwhelming display of fado's wide emotional range - and her own.
A beautiful evening with one of the great singers of our time.
