Based on a true events during the 2000 presidential election, 'American Violet' tells the story of Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a 24 year-old African-American single mother of four from Texas. One day, while at work the powerful district attorney (Michael O'Keefe) leads a drugs bust, sweeping Dee's housing project. Police drag Dee from work in handcuffs, dumping her in prison and charging her with drug dealing. Even though Dee has no drug record and no drugs were ever found, she is offered a hellish choice: plead guilty and go home to her children with a criminal record or remain in prison and fight the charges thus, jeopardizing her custody and risking a long prison sentence. Despite the urgings of her mother, Dee, with the help of a lawyer (Tim Blake Nelson) and former narcotics officer (Will Patton) takes the astonishing decision and chooses to fight the district attorney and take on the Texas justice system with potentially devastating consequences.
