When you think "Polish sightseeing destination," Auschwitz probably isn't the first place that comes to mind, but the concentration camp draws swarms of tourists and high school history classes. Sven, a young German doing his civil service abroad, is annoyed to have wound up in small-town Poland rather than swinging Amsterdam. His chagrin deepens when he's appointed caretaker of Stanislaw Krzemiski, an ill-tempered camp survivor who orders him about like his personal servant. While most of the townspeople view Germans with hostility, a pretty young guide takes to Sven, livening up the film with a few trips to the disco. The main theme, though, is Sven's growing commitment to the memorial, and his acceptance of Krzemiski's importance as a living link to the Holocaust
