This is the story of a young man Vijay (Rajnikant) whose father was murdered and his sister raped and killed. This crime was committed by three rowdies (Pran, Prem Chopra, Danny) when Vijay was a small boy then. But the atrocities done on his family kindled the fire of Vendetta in his heart from then only. His other sister Devi Singh (Hema Malini) who was also an eye witness to, this horror also wanted to punish these criminals. But according to law. Both brother and sister had the same goal but their approach to achieve this end was totally different. Vijay had no faith in law and justice. Vijay took advantage of the weaknesses of the law, in the same way as the three criminals did and achieved his objective. But during this crusade, he had to encounter the fierce opposition of his police officer sister. During this process Vijay met Jaanissar Khan (Amitabh Bachchan). The loopholes of law has ruined the happy family life of Jaanissar and created a vacuum in his life. Two wronged soals united and the flames of hatred and Vendetta united and turned into an inferno. And this inferno burnt the adversaries of Vijay into ashes. Vijay's sweet heart Meena (Reena Roy) also joined her boyfriend Vijay to annihilate his enemies.
