Synopsis:
A sweeping tale of ill-fated romance and cross-channel relationships. Jean-Pierre Leaud plays Claude, a young Parisian who meets two English girls - Anne, a sculptress, and Muriel, a schoolteacher - on a turn-of-the-century trip to Wales. This meeting will spark a menage-a-trois spanning over 20 years, during which time alliances will be formed, broken, rearranged and reassembled in a tumultuous yet humorous portrait of human interconnectivity.

Dated and pretentious - Anne and Muriel review by JG

Spoiler Alert
25/11/2014

Truffault wanted to make a reverse image of 'Jules & Jim' with one man involved with two women. He managed that but the characters are false, pretentious, cardboard cut-outs reciting speeches not real people, rather as Rohmer does frequently. The whole piece has no reality, nothing is believable. The acting is mannered and theatrical. Leaud is not good, he never is except in '400 Blows'.

Enjoyable but odd - Anne and Muriel review by CP

Spoiler Alert

I agree with the previous reviewer; this film is false, however, it makes sense, it is a reasonably common situation, a young men being in love with two sisters and unable to choose. The English characters were somewhat wooden, but the locations are gorgeous and, for me a bonus, the French clear and easily understood. Not a great film, but much better than watching tv!
