The programme starts at Perth in 1961, with a wide variety of locomotive classes - including ex-LMS and ex-LNER 'Pacifics' - viewed at Perth General Station and the locomotive depot. After views on the Glenfarg route south of Perth the branch lines to Crieff and the Gleneagles Hotel feature, with a 'Caley Jumbo' No.57261 shunting in Gleneagles station, after which it travels to Blackford with the 'pick-up' goods. Ex-NBR Class J36s are seen working at Bathgate, on a railtour at Musselburgh and Smeaton; the South Queensferry and Charlestown branches plus Seafield Colliery, Kirkcaldy. Freight workings at Burntisland and on the Leslie Branch are shown together with coal traffic around Kelty, Thornton Jct. and the nearby Wemyss Private Railway. After views of Ladybank Jct., Kilmany and Wormit, Perth is featured once more before the programme ends at Forfar with film taken in 1962 of ex-Caledonian Railway 4-4-0 No. 54465.
