One of the best historical compilations on the subject of aircraft carriers. Very much a film for those who know and understand the Navy's mission in the air - the flyings and their aircraft - and want to see and know even more. The filming is first class, as is the script and narration.
Aviation at sea depicts the history of the carrier from the Langley in the twenties to the Kennedy in the seventies. It includes classic episodes in U.S. Naval aviation history: Battle of Coral Sea, Battle of Midway, launching of B-25 mitchells from the Hornet, the Lexington hit and sunk, invasion of Saipan, suicide Kamikaze raids - and much much more.
The aircraft featured are too numerous to fully list. Just a small sample includes: Wildcats, Hellcats, Dauntlesses, Avengers and Corsairs. Also many Navy jets such as Demons, Sky Hawks and Phantoms. All filmed in fighting action and in great colour. Aviation at Sea is truly a valuable addition to any collection of Naval aviation.
