Eliot Green (Jeremy Steyn) is turning 13 and about to undergo one of the great rituals of Judaism: the Bar Mitzvah, when a boy becomes a man, and the party that celebrates it is the event of a lifetime. To Eliot's mother, Rita (Maria Charles), it's a grand stage on which to present the accomplishments of her family to a waiting world. To her husband Victor (Bernard Spear), it's an expensive party, getting more expensive every day. To Lesley (Adrienne Posta), his sister, it means endless responsibility and pouring oil like a troubled daughter. To Grandad Wax it's tradition. And to Rabbi Sherman (Jack Lynn) it's another Shabbat, another Bar Mitzvah over and time to put his feet up - or so he thinks...
