Frank Capra's "The Battle of Russia" is a fascinating look at the incredible story of the Russian army's role during the Second World War. From the Nazis' initial march into Russian territory all the way to their eventual defeat at Stalingrad. Part One provides a useful summary of the past attempts by foreign powers to invade Russia over the past 700 years and explains why the countiy was seen as such a hot prize to its invaders and why no army in history has ever succeeded in conquering it. Part Two focuses on the Russian's infamous "scorched earth" strategy used to draw the Nazi army farther and farther away from the safety of the German border, and on two of Russia's most famous victories: the stalwart defence of Leningrad and Stalingrad. The Nazi army could never have anticipated the extraordinary bravery and ingenuity displayed by the Russians, and what was hoped to be a relatively simple operation for the German army proved to be a disaster that cost them over a million lives...and in essence, the outcome of the war. This superb set also features two other documentaries: "The Siege of Leningrad" and "Arc of Fire", which provides a further insight into the infamous 900-day siege and the Russian people's indomitable resistance that signalled the end of the Nazis' influence in Europe.
