"Panzer Marche! - The Dash for Bastogne" is the first of a new series of video's that will build into a collection covering all the highlights of this massive and controversial campaign from BHTV and Pen and Sword Digital. The 'Battle of the Bulge' was a campaign that caught the Allies off guard and was fought in terrible weather conditions by some of the best German and Allied troops fighting in the West. In this video we examine the background to the campaign with leading American historian Dr. Steve Weiss before following the advance of one of Hitler's most successful Panzer Commanders, Hasso von Manteuffel, Fifth Panzer Army. The BHTV team of battlefield guides travel in the same freezing and wintery weather from the German border into the lightly held US front line. From the outset, despite the shock that had many of the 110th Regiment heading west to safety, small groups of GI's did their best to delay the advance of the Panzers. Under the cloak of bad weather, the Germans advanced more slowly than planned against tanks, fighting desperate delaying actions. The German dash for Bastogne was thwarted, giving enough time for the vital crossroad town of Bastogne to be reinforced by Combat Command B of 10th US Armored and 101st US Airborne Division just before the Panzer spearheads closed in on the town. The dash for Bastogne was over but the siege was about to begin...In the usual BHTV style, a selection of the country's most respected and knowledgeable experts take to the fields where the battles were originally fought almost 70 years ago to explain the conflict in meticulous detail.
