First of a series of documentaries looking at the military developments on the Western front during the Second World War, chronicling the early stages of the land war. All the major landmarks from the period are investigated, from the so-called 'sit-down' war in late 1939 and early 1940, through the German campaign against Belgium and Holland, the separating of the Allied armies leading to the encircling of British troops at Dunkirk, the armistice between France, Italy and Germany to the deployment of German U-Boats out of French Atlantic harbours.
