In 1462, the first African slaves were deported to Cape Verde, an archipelago spanning 10 islands, which until then were uninhabited. They brought with them the rhythms and the roots of what became the Batuque: a music performed by women. The Batuque accompanies every moment of the day in the island, and has precise social meaning.
