"Beyond the Stars" is a heart-warming story about dreams and the choice to stand behind them regardless of circumstances. 17-year-old Eric Michaels (Christian Slater) is determined to become an astronaut. Suspended from school when his latest rocket experiment explodes, burning down the Principal's office, Eric's divorced mother packs him off to spend a month at his father's home in Cedar Bay, Oregon. Richard Michaels (Robert Foxworth), his father, is an embittered aerospace engineer who once encouraged Eric's enthusiasm for the planets and the stars. But, after spending months laid off when NASA shut down the Apollo program, Richard's continued resentment has driven a wedge between he and his son. Now Eric has four weeks to spend with whom he cannot get along and his father's new girlfriend, Laurie McCall (Sharon Stone). Eric meets the beautiful nineteen-year-old Mara Simon (Olivia d'Abo), who introduces Eric to the wonders of first love. She also introduces him to local resident and former astronaut Paul Andrews (Martin Sheen) -the last man to walk on the moon. Eric's boundless enthusiasm for space travel seems to anger Paul Andrews, a hard drinking, disillusioned man. But slowly a friendship between Eric and Paul develops. And, in moments of vulnerability, Paul unravels fragmented memories of his moonwalk: an event that was to dramatically alter the course of his life. Paul Andrew's sense of his destiny to travel in space strikes a completely responsive chord in Eric. Both share a similar choice that powerfully-and -mysteriously-bonds them. This only further threatens Eric's father Richard, who already feels quite separate from his son. And space is once again to blame. Eric tries desperately to make his father understand that his future career as an astronaut is not a child's fantasy; it is his dream and his conviction.
