We love our mobile phones – they have become an integral part of modern urban life and the selection between different models has never been greater. But what most of us don't know is that there is a bloody secret hidden in each one with the majority of the minerals used to produce phones coming from mines in the Eastern DR Congo. The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals and thereby financing a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II. During the last 15 years, the conflict has cost the lives of more than 5 million people with an estimated 300,000 women raped.
