Boesman and Lena are a restless, homeless couple eking out an existence in modern day South Africa. Their tumble down the social ladder, told in flashbacks from happier times, has brought them to a makeshift shelter on the mudflats where Lena, fierce and passionate, chatters endlessly - only to be ignored by Boesman. But when an old Xhosa tribesman stumbles into their path, the cracks in their relationship widen as Lena's instinct is to protect while Boesman's is to abuse... With powerhouse performances and beautifully shot, this magnificent film is on one level a study of the anxieties of human existence, on another level a powerful indictment of social injustice. Ultimately 'Boesman and Lena' is a moving testament to human resilience and the will to survive.
