Nino Manfredi is marvelous in this uproarious comedy about an Italian immigrant working odd jobs in prosperous Switzerland and trying desperately to fit in. Though his work becomes increasingly degrading, he tenaciously refuses to give up and go home. Like Chaplin's beloved tramp, this hapless Everyman is eternally rejected, yet ever hopeful. 'Bread and Chocolate' is a comic but poignant portrait of a man caught between two worlds. Not suited for the society he aspires to, he's also unable to return to the world from which he came.
