Three unlikely travelers, Madeline Armstrong (Susan Dey), a Globe Aid relief worker, Robert Creighton (Cotter Smith), veteran war photographer, injured in a jeep accident, and Maxwell Spring (Robert Whitehead), a rugged Brit whose property has been burned out, all flying out of a war zone in East Africa, are thrown together when their plane crash-lands in a strange and isolated valley. They build a fire and begin to assess their situation when, suddenly, out of the darkness, appears a group of men of different races, bearing torches. The torchbearers serve the crash-survivors an exotic feast, then lead them blindfolded behind a waterfall and through the portal of a splendid hidden city. It is, they discover, an enchanted place - "a sanctuary to life", as Halek (Nigel Havers), leader of the community, calls it. Priceless jewels are common decorations. Magical leaves have healing, youth-giving power. All the great works of humankind - literature, philosophy, wondrous achievements in science and the arts - are preserved and honored there. It is a reservoir for civilization, Halek explains. When the world of the outsiders collapses from its problems, the people of the hidden city will be the guides to teach what true civilization is. Madeline meets The Guardian (Cicely Tyson), an aged African woman who is the spiritual leader. The woman wears a ring which, when touched, reveals scenes of tragedy and suffering through all the ages. Her time is nearly finished, The Guardian says, and Madeline has been chosen for her successor. Madeline is torn. The appeal of the hidden city is powerful, but so is the sense of her unfinished work on the outside, and she resolves to escape. Spring also plans to flee - with a hoard of precious stones he has stolen. And Creighton plans to take with him Fatima (Josette Simon), a beautiful woman of the city with whom he has fallen in love. But their flight turns tragic - first Fatima and then Spring die, and Madeline just manages to save Creighton with the magical leaves. On her own hand, she sees then, the ring of The Guardian has suddenly appeared, and her destiny is clear. Others can carry on her work with the refugees, but Madeline must return to the hidden city.
