Synopsis:
This fascinating programme visits the LMS, the largest railway company in the British Isles that served the heartlands of industry of the Midlands, the shipping of the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey, the holiday resorts of the North West coast as well as North Wales and Scotland. We see the significant changes within this operator between the age of steam and the modern railway. We start our journey at the now closed Atherton Bag Lane aboard a Stanier 8F, one of the workhorses of the LMS. We then move on to the most charming of railways, the Cromford and High Peak, with its many sidings, just as it is about to be axed.
This line with its many steep gradients and unique trail bed of dry stone embankments was mainly used for freight and though no longer in existence, it now forms the High Peak walking and leisure route. Our final visit is to the Lune Gorge where we see a wonderful selection of Black 5s, Class 45s, 86s and 87s, so many of which have since been cut up.
