First broadcast in November 1969, this classic BBC colour film of Benjamin Britten's operatic masterpiece is conducted by the composer, with Peter Pears outstanding in the role he created. The fisherman Peter Grimes is ostracized following the death of his apprentice. Despite the friendship of the schoolteacher Ellen Orford, Grimes is pursued by the village, finally descending into madness and inevitable tragedy.
